October 2 marks the birthday of our favorite zany performer. Born Julius Henry Marx in 1890, Groucho Marx began his stage career at the tender young age of 15. Alongside his brothers “Harpo” and “Chico”, he would go on to form the Marx Brothers. Today, the Marx Brothers are remembered as some of the most beloved comedians of all time.

Each of the Marx Brothers had their own unique and memorable personality. But Groucho, with his signature moustache and eyebrows, was the king of quips and quick wit. To celebrate his birthday, here are ten pieces of advice summed up in his most famous one-liners.

Don’t Take Yourself So Seriously

“If you find it hard to laugh at yourself, I would be happy to do it for you.”

Learn by Example

“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

Fake It Until You Make It

“The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”

Be Flexible

“Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them…well I have others.”

Stay Grounded

“I’m not crazy about reality, but it’s still the only place to get a decent meal.”

Age Is Irrelevant

“Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.”

Embrace Your Inner Kook

“Blessed are the cracked, for they shall let in the light.”

Take Pride In Your Accomplishments

“Why look at me! I’ve worked my way up from nothing to a state of extreme poverty.”

Not Every Day Will Be a Good One

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it.”

Choose Your Words Wisely

“Quote me as saying I was misquoted.”
