Salmon are one of the most unique water animals on the planet. They are known for traveling great distances to live out their life cycle and fulfill their destiny. From the coho to the sockeye to the mighty Chinook, the salmon species has many amazing qualities and characteristics. Here are five key things we can learn from the salmon:

1. Be Flexible and Adaptable

Salmon are one of the few fish that can live in both fresh and salt water. Salmon are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean where they spend much of their adulthood, and then return to the place of their birth to spawn. Strive to cultivate the ability to thrive in different environments.

2. Stay Observant and Hone Your Senses

No matter how far away a salmon has ventured from their original place of birth, they are always able to find their way back for spawning season. It is believed that their acute sense of smell is what assists them in tracing their way back, in some cases thousands of miles. Fine tune your own senses and observational skills to become even more efficient and effective in life.

3. Fuel Up Before a Journey, and Travel Light

Some salmon travel up to 3,500 miles to spawn, and they fuel their efforts from food that they ate before embarking upon their epic journey. They actually do not eat at all during the trip as they make their way toward their destination. While this approach would likely be too extreme for humans, traveling light can help any adventurer to simplify, be less distracted and enjoy the journey even more.

4. Don’t Give Up

Salmon are known for their ability to persevere through challenging conditions and rushing waters that are flowing against them. Drawing from inner reserves, they continue to leap and strive until they’ve reached their goal. If you ever feel like you’re swimming against the current of life, take heart and draw strength and inspiration from the salmon. Your own resolve and determination is there, and you can tap into it.

5. Make the Most of Your Time

The life span of the salmon ends after they spawn, but this doesn’t cause them to delay their mission, doubt their purpose or lose their resolve. Every one of us has a finite amount of time ahead, whether it’s months, years or decades. Listen to your heart, connect with your mission and purpose in life, give it your all, and make the most of your time here.

The salmon combines flexibility, finely honed senses, perseverance and a commitment to their life mission to amaze and inspire us. Tap into these qualities in yourself, and live life to the fullest.
