We spend a lot of time worrying about the future – who we will become, who we will love, who we will learn from, who we will live with, and so on. And while it’s good to plan for the best, sometimes we can get so wrapped up in future plans that we forget about the present moment.
Because ultimately today is the only day we can truly possess. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet arrived. We have only this time, now, in which to fully live, laugh, and love one another.
A cool way to visualize this idea is with a jar of jellybeans – a full jar representing our lives, and each individual jellybean representing a single day in that life. In fact, this colorful concept is the basis for an awesomely inspirational video called “The Time You Have,” which begins with the narrator pouring out roughly 28,835 jellybeans onto the floor.
Over the next two minutes, we see exactly how many jellybeans are deducted for activities like sleeping, eating, and work – and we are left with the extra jellybeans symbolizing the remaining free time we have. Finally, at the end, we are shown one single jellybean and asked the question “what are you going to do today?”
It’s a great way to think about life, and a great way to think about how we can make each day count. Here are some of our thoughts after watching “The Time You Have”:
- Today matters. Each day is special because it will never come again in this exact flavor or color.
- Time is ours to spend. What we decide to do with our time is our choice – and it can be incredibly empowering to make that realization!
- Each day is a small life. When we wake up in the morning with the mindset of beginning a new journey, we may be amazed at how far we can travel by the day’s end.
