While commonly attributed to Gandhi, this famous bumper-sticker quote actually comes from a much deeper reflection on personal and social transformation.

The quote as it really exists:

“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”

More than simply telling us to “be the change,” Gandhi’s true words encourage us to begin changing right now, in this moment, without waiting to see what others around us will do or think. And only when we begin to transform ourselves, can the world as a whole begin to turn.
