Skin is the body’s largest and fastest grown organ. It’s the first line of defense against foreign bodies. So it needs plenty of TLC! While the quest for healthy skin sends many of us scouring the drugstore aisles, you might benefit from just checking the fridge.

That’s right. Many kitchen staples aren’t just for eating and cooking. They’re naturally full of properties that can help even out skin tone, zap zits, and moisturize. Not to mention, they don’t come with the hefty price tag that so many beauty store products do. 

Try experimenting with some of the following edibles.* While there is no one-size-fits-all food that works for everyone, you might end up incorporating some of these ingredients into your regular skincare routine!

Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil tastes great in baked goods, and feels even better on your skin. It is most popularly used as a moisturizer. Just gently work a small amount onto the skin after cleansing: a little bit goes a long way! Other surprising perks? Coconut oil makes an excellent makeup remover and some even like to use it as a replacement for shaving cream. Studies have also found that virgin coconut oil can have a healing effect on eczema due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Take note though! Coconut oil is considered moderately comedogenic, meaning that it is better for folks with normal to dry skin since it might clog pores.

Lemons

Lemons may be sour on the tongue, but they can be great for the face. The critic acid in lemons helps brighten and lighten skin by exfoliating dead skins cells. As a result, many like to use lemons to help deal with discoloration, blemishes, and acne scars. Lemons can also be used to dry out pimples! For skincare, we recommend using the fruit’s juice (rather than the fruit itself) and diluting it with water first. 

Oatmeal

There’s nothing like a steaming hot bowl of oatmeal on a chilly morning. But who knew that oatmeal is as good for your beauty routine as it is for breakfast? Oatmeal contains saponins, which are natural cleansing agents. This means oatmeal is an excellent face wash! You can make a paste by mixing plain dry oatmeal with water and a little bit of honey.

Oatmeal is also especially kind to those who struggle with rashes and dermatitis, as folks with sensitive skin tend to have higher pH levels. Oatmeal helps by lowering those pH levels (and its anti-inflammatory properties don’t hurt either!). To heal irritated skin, just add a cup of plain oatmeal to a warm bath for a nice soothing soak.

Apple Cider Vinegar

A naturally acidic substance, apple cider helps balance your skins PH levels. It is also a natural astringent and it is most popularly used as a toner. Others use it as a remedy for dandruff and a few brave souls even swear by drinking apple cider vinegar to help with acne! Similar to when you use lemons, it is best to dilute the cider with water before applying it to your face. And of course, it is best to use organic!

Honey

Last but certainly not least! Honey is something of a miracle substance. In addition to being delicious, it is anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants. It is a natural antibiotic and is also a humectant (a fancy way of saying it is super moisturizing). Dab some on your lips to make a tasty, nontoxic lip balm. Wash your face with honey in the shower or mix it with sugar to make an exfoliating scrub. Put a little bit on a pimple. Some people even swear by using honey for cuts and scrapes. It is a truly versatile condiment!

But before you grab a bottle, make sure you read the label! Raw and organic honey works best for skincare. That stuff in the bear-shaped container looks super cute, but can be loaded with additives.
